Rev. Lég. - La Revue Légale (Canada)
An alternate legal citation for Quebec's La Revue Légale used by some legal citators but R.L. is both the official and preferred legal citation.
A Québec, Canada, sometimes law journal and now primarily law reporter with case annotations. Cases are published in whatever language, as between French and English, that judgment was rendered; in most cases, French.
Started with Volume 1 in 1869 and still ongoing to date, published by Wilson & Lafleur (Montreal).
The first volume was put together from Sorel, Québec by a sheriff (Michel Mathieu) and a lawyer (Adolphe Germain).
The preface to Volume 1:
"... a (law) review to promote the study of law in this country and to be of assistance to jurists in their practice."
La Revue Légale had reached volume 21 by 1892 and by that editon, the publisher had been identified as A. Periard of "21, 23 & 25 rue St. Jacques", Montréal.
In 1895, a "nouvelle série" (new series) continued the law report (1 Rev. Lég. (N.S.)), running to Volume 48 and including cases up to 1942.
As of 1943, the Revue Légale titled their volumes by year of publication, with one volume per year, converting to the square bracket format.
