Originally The Syllabi started in 1876 by John West and his brother Horatio West, covering Minnesota judicial opinions.
In 1877, it was renamed the North Western Reporter and included Wisconsin court opinions.
In 1879, the North Western Reporter included court decisions from the supreme courts of:
- Iowa;
- Michigan;
- Minnesota;
- Nebraska;
- Wisconsin; and
- Dakota Territories (now North Dakota and South Dakota).
It published until 1942 (volume 300), when the original series gave way to a Second Series: N.W. (2d) or N.W. 2d or even NW 2d.
The publisher is still West. This law report is the original law report of the West company, as of 2010 West-Thomson, a subsidiary of Thomson-Reuters.
