The first issue came out on January 5, 1878.

It was intended to be a weekly law journal for Quebec lawyers but also for Canadian lawyers.

Each year, the volumes would be bound up into a single volume such that, for the purposes of the formal legal citation, all volumes issued in 1878 were combined to form 1 Leg. News.

Legal News (Canada) ended with volume 20, the final issue being #24 of that year when the publisher wrote of "the increasing pressure of other engagement".

The title Legal News was a popular one causing some confusion and challenges for those, such as ourselves, are relied upon for the accurate and thorough cataloguing of legal citations. For example, there is also the Chicago Legal News published in 57 volumes from 1868 to 1925, and the American Legal News (Am.Leg.N.), published from 1901 to 1925.
