Islamic L. & Soc'y - Islamic Law and Society

Related Citation: J. L. & Religion

The editorial in the first issue (1994) described the proposed scope of Islamic Law and Society in these words:

"... a new journal, Islamic Law and Society, designed to provide an international forum for research on Islamic law and to promote a better understanding of its underlying social and historical contexts. The journal seeks as its audience Islamicists, historians, social scientists, and legal practitioners.

"The journal will be published three times a year and will include essays on various aspects of Islamic law; a section on contemporary legal developments containing annotated translations of recent legislation, court decisions, fatwas, and other relevant texts produced in the Muslim world; and a book review section. In addition, the journal occasionally will publish state-of-the-art review essays on new approaches to the field, editions and translations of short legal texts, and brief notes about ongoing research projects."

According to the commercial publisher, Brill (Netherlands), circa 2012:

"Islamic Law and Society provides a forum for research in the field of classical and modern Islamic law, in Muslim and non-Muslim countries. Celebrating its eighteenth birthday in 2011, Islamic Law and Society has established itself as an invaluable resource for the subject both in the private collections of scholars and practitioners as well as in the major research libraries of the world. Islamic Law and Society encourages discussion on all branches of Islamic law, with a view to promoting an understanding of Islamic law, in both theory and practice, from its emergence until modern times and from juridical, historical and social-scientific perspectives."
