The Criminal Law Review has been published since 1954 and is often confused with the publication of the same name, also first published in 1954 by the Association of Lawyers of the Criminal Courts of Manhattan (the latter, distinguished by the legal citation Crim. L. Rev.).

Sweet & Maxwell published the Criminal Law Review in London as of 1954. The initial editors were John Burke and Peter Allsop. The editorial of the first edition;

"The purpose of publishing the Criminal Law Review is to put in the hands of all those interested in the practice and administration of the criminal law a monthly periodical which will cover every aspect of the subject in detail."

The publisher is still (circa 2009) Sweet & Maxwell.
