The Court's 2010 statement of appellate jurisdiction:
"The Court of Appeal hears appeals from the Court of Queen's Bench, the Provincial Court and administrative tribunals. As well, the Court provides its opinion on questions referred by the Lieutenant Governor under the Judicature Act. Court of Appeal sittings are held in Edmonton and Calgary and serve the entire Province of Alberta."
In 1998, the Alberta Court of Appeal opted for a database and Internet-friendly neutral citation system: ABCA, for the Alberta Court of Appeal.
It may be presented in the traditional legal citation format, with periods, as in "A.B.C.A."
Now, all cases chosen for release to the public are assigned a permanent ABCA number with the four-digit year followed by the "ABCA" and then a sequentially assigned number.
The first decision of the Alberta Court of Appeal to be assigned a permanent ABCA legal citation:
R. v. Siemens, 1998 ABCA 1
More recently, the brilliantly argued 2001 case M. (S.) v. Alberta (Criminal Injuries Appeal Board).
